“It’s the way you tell ‘em” my stepdad used to say, a remark usually delivered deadpan in the tumbleweed moment following someone’s lame joke.
When he wasn’t wisecracking à la Frank Carson, another of his pithy maxims – intended to emulate the same point – was, “it’s not what you do but the way you do it”.
He was right of course.
Truth is, good communication is key to almost everything. And hitting the right note is an art.
I trained as a journalist many years ago not because I had a burning desire to break major news stories (that came later) but out of a profound love for language, a passion for painting a picture with words, and – importantly – the impact those words can have.
These days I apply my journalistic skills to my work as a communications specialist. That means listening intently while asking the right questions, having the ability to read between the lines to find a cogent hook, and the intuition to add context and empathy when telling a client’s story.
It means expert research, a dense contacts book and a media-savvy approach.
And it means always operating with honesty, integrity and authenticity.
Conveying a client’s message clearly, creatively and consistently, in a way that connects with audiences, helps build trust, credibility and strong relationships with the people they’re trying to reach.
Born in the UK where I was professionally trained in both journalism and public relations – but with 20 years’ experience in the Caribbean – I have a deep understanding and appreciation for this special region.
The result? Clear-eyed, clearcut and comprehensive strategies that honour cultural sensitivities and inflect local nuance where appropriate, resonate with global audiences and adhere to international best practices.
My boutique consultancy brings the personal touch to a world characterised by automated messages, predictive text, and formulaic, AI-generated content.
I can help ensure your organisation communicates efficiently, meaningfully and with intention – from the inside out – while handling media, helping you navigate the difficult times, and keeping my listening ear open to protect your reputation.
Before moving to the Caribbean in 2006, I spent several years working for what was back then the UK’s biggest selling evening newspaper.
Since then I’ve reported on everything from government corruption in the Turks & Caicos Islands to the environmental, cultural and social plights and triumphs of tiny, overlooked nations.
My entry into the communications field was organic; it came from a passion for helping clients solidify their messaging. I only work with clients who share my commitment to integrity; I’m not in it to spin it.
Through strategic thinking, values-led PR and compelling, people-centric storytelling, I can help you portray your company in the best possible light but in a way that’s transparent, principled and sincere, and aligns with your brand’s core values.
Over my 20-plus years in the field I’ve not just honed my skills but learned a few things along the way.
I’ve learned there’s power in honesty.
I’ve learned authenticity speaks volumes.
And I’ve learned that the key to getting a message across to an audience is a simple one: it’s the way you tell them.
